Body Shop – Tips for Selecting One by Jim Eastman
How do the majority of people choose a body shop? When a vehicle accident occurs, those involved will be calling their insurance representative, and usually the insurance company representative will point his client to an auto body shop that he advocates. Insurance agents are quick to recommend a repair shop when a client is in need of vehicle repairs resulting from an accident. But although going to a recommended shop may seem like a great convenience to the client, it isn’t really a good idea! Let’s talk about why that is.
When your insurance representative steers you toward a repair shop, it’s going to be a repair shop within his company’s “direct repair program.” The company teams up with a shop and has a contractual agreement with that repair shop. The auto body shop is under agreement to make vehicle repairs to clients sent them by the company. The insurance company’s part of the agreement is to point their clients toward that shop.
But the shop is required to write their estimates based on using “aftermarket” auto parts. However that’s not all – should a lawsuit result on account of substandard car repairs, the auto body repair shop is under agreement to indemnify the insurer and bear liability.
But you might be thinking “So why would I care if the auto body repair shop repairs my auto using aftermarket auto parts?” “Why should I care?” Well, you are about to learn why, and it may well shock you!
Parts are called OEM (Original equipment manufacturer’s) if created by the car maker or his vendor, and those that aren’t are called aftermarket car parts. They are commonly manufactured in Taiwan.
They are much less pricey compared with the parts made by the auto maker (to the delight of your insurance carrier) and using them means you insurance company will have to pay out less in claims. But regrettably, this is a case of “you get what you pay for” as the aftermarket car parts are generally of lesser quality. Car repairs with these types of parts could possibly result in an auto that’s unsafe to drive, or at the very least is more inclined to break down!
Given that there are legal concerns involved if car repairs are made in a substandard way, for what possible reason might a body shop choose to enter into the insurer’s direct repair program to begin with? Simple: because they want to stay in business! Mainly because it’s a matter of the success of their business. Since the majority of people needing body work will follow their insurer’s advice, the shops not in the direct repair program are not likely to get a lot of business.
But say you’ve been involved in an automobile accident but would rather take your car to a body shop other than that advised by your agent? Your insurance firm may well play “dirty tricks” to convince you that you made the wrong choice. For example, they may intentionally postpone sending an adjuster to review the damage for 2 or more weeks, or they may refuse to pay for repairs – or they might delay sending their adjustor to examine your vehicle.
So does this make life harder for you? Undoubtedly! But it’s worthwhile when the alternative is to go to their “preferred” body shop and have to suffer the potential results!
To wrap up our discussion, if you have a vehicle accident and require your automobile repaired, never neglect to do your research. If the auto body repair shop your insurance agent recommends is using aftermarket car parts, find another shop. And if your insurance agent says something to the effect of “They won’t agree with our appraiser”, “We’re not able to work with that shop”, or “We won’t warranty the repair if you go there” be aware that these and other similar statements are misleading at best, and at worst, outright falsehoods!
